Kudos to Bonnie Klein who wrote to the Coast Reporter last week urging the federal government to supply heat pumps for all renters and homeowners. In our own province, CleanBC provides subsidies for heat pumps, but not for many careful spenders.
My husband and I are a case in point: in order to conserve our retirement fund, we recently installed a heat pump in only our bedroom. We plan to place additional heat pumps throughout our home in coming years.
We would install them room-by-room, depending on our budget at the time.
The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program will reimburse homeowners up to $16,000 for heat pumps, but they have to be installed all at once throughout the entire home. The subsidy program allots no funds for gradual heat pump installation. If you’re on a budget, forget it.
An incremental installation of heat-pumps would protect lives from severe heat and also protect pocketbooks. The BC government should use common sense and subsidize heat pumps, no matter what portion of a home they cool.
