Lasqueti Island forms committee for emergency services

Powell River Regional District’s (PRRD) committee of the whole will recommend the board create an advisory committee to allow more input from Lasqueti residents on the island’s fire services.

Powell River Regional District’s (PRRD) committee of the whole will recommend the board create an advisory committee to allow more input from Lasqueti residents on the island’s fire services.

The committee also advised the board not to rescind bylaws that would create the legislative structure for 9-11 service and a house-numbering system on Lasqueti Island in case residents decide they want those services.

“It’s a decent compromise,” said Al Radke, regional district chief administration officer. “The trust is with them to figure out their own solutions.”

This summer residents petitioned the board to hold off on making a decision on the matter until March 2016 and rescind Bylaws 317.1 and 350.1 as an act of good faith after what some resident deemed heavy-handed decision-making by the board.

Lasqueti is the only electoral area inside the regional district that is not covered with either the emergency dispatch service or house numbers.

According to Ryan Thoms, regional district manager for emergency services, this creates “holes in public safety.”
