Powell River RCMP has located human remains along the banks of Powell River on the Townsite side of Wildwood bridge. The remains were discovered at approximately 7 pm on Friday, October 2.

Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, BC Coroners Service, BC Conservation Officer Service and forensics investigators were all at the scene on Saturday afternoon, which has been secured since Friday night.

Reports of RCMP and conservation officers with flashlights in the trailed area along the river began circulating Friday evening and the area was secured with police tape shortly after 7 pm.

At this time the remains have not been identified, nor the cause of death determined, according to RCMP.

It is unknown whether the discovery is connected to a missing person search for Charles Yvon Mercier, 35, that began Friday, September 25.

No further information will be released at this time, according to RCMP, as the investigation is in preliminary stages.
