A trio of candidates are seeking to represent qathet Regional District Area D (Texada Island): Sandy McCormick, Rebecca Hathaway and Tom Read. General election day is October 15.
The Peak asked each candidate the following question:
Why should voters choose you to serve as director for Area D?
Here is the response from Sandy McCormick:
As Texada’s director for eight years, I have a solid track record of helping people, protecting our land and preserving our freedoms, autonomy, resilience and island lifestyle.
Most importantly, I listen to the community, consult before making decisions and maintain good rapport with qRD colleagues to win majority votes in Texada’s favour. I have the experience and knowledge of the community to stand up for the Texada we know and love.
Texadans spoke and I delivered: freedoms enshrined in our updated OCP; Northeast Bay protected; independent recreation and heritage services; both GBID and VAID water system upgrades supported for gas tax funding; commercial air service returned without airport fencing; night medi-vac service restored; no fence around Lot 6; both recycle depots kept open; VA dock upgraded without added taxes; no gates at Howie’s Beach and Ponderosa; custom grave markers allowed at Woodland Cemetery; successfully championed Indigenous-style structure at Shelter Point without using tax dollars.
Working on island-wide internet access, protecting Mount Davies and Stromberg Falls, public electric-vehicle charging stations and allowing volunteers to work in regional district parks.
I’ve got the energy, tenacity and determination to keep this Texada-focused momentum going.
