Mother of missing person Charles Yvon Mercier has posted to Facebook that Powell River RCMP told her remains discovered Friday, October 2 in Townsite are those of her son.

RCMP are still not commenting on a connection between human remains discovered last week and the ongoing search for the missing Powell River man, despite a stream of condolence messages for the man posted on Facebook on Thursday, October 8.

No further information has been released about the investigation, said sergeant Kevin Day on Tuesday, October 13. Official media statements will be released by Vancouver Island Major Crime Unit, said Day.

Mercier’s mother Wilma Tworek posted early Thursday morning “the police confirmed tonight that the remains they found in Powell River was my son Charlie.” Condolence messages on Mercier’s own Facebook page from family and friends also began appearing early that morning.

RCMP has been searching for Mercier since September 25. Human remains were discovered in Townsite near the Wildwood bridge on Friday, October 2.

Meanwhile, the BC Coroner Service continues to look into the deaths of two adults found dead on Wednesday, September 30 inside a holiday home in Bliss Landing.

Regional coroner Matt Brown said the investigation into the deaths is still underway and he could not yet identify the two bodies or comment on cause of death.
