Fitness events: A series of fun sporting events has been organized to help Powell River on its way to becoming the fittest city in the country.

Rx Wellness Community Sports Day is organized for Sunday, November 15, at Powell River Recreation Complex. The day will include a wide variety of free, family-friendly activities including ice and roller skating, gymnastics, yoga, biking, zumba, boxing, pickle ball, hiking and more.

“The City of Powell River really supports this initiative,” stated Neil Pukesh, operations manager for the recreation complex, in a media release. “It’s an excellent opportunity for the community to get active and supports our vision of becoming one of the healthiest communities in British Columbia.”

Destination Wellness is a roundtable discussion at 2 pm for those interested in learning more about efforts being made to improve physical literacy for Powell River. It will be of interest to anyone interested in working together to promote and increase community participation in physical activity. Also, a soccer scrimmage is set to kick off at Oceanview Learning Centre at 3:30 pm.

“We are excited to keep the momentum going from last year and collaborate further on actions we can take to support gaps and reinforce initiatives in motion that will help our local students and community,” stated Louise Kenning, Health Schools BC regional representative, in the media release.

Rx Wellness Jumpstart Day, the second in the series, encourages parents and children to get active together through a variety of activities including bouncy castle, climbing wall, soccer scrimmages, biking, scavenger hunt and more. It is also open to the public and will be held at James Thomson Elementary School from 3 to 5 pm on Friday, November 20.

The events are being organized as a partnership between City of Powell River, School District No. 47, Division of Powell River Family Practice, Canadian Tire, Rx Wellness and Jinga Kids.
