Briefly: Election Buses

City of Powell River committee of the whole (COW) has recommended free bus rides on federal-election day and asked council to approve the service at its Thursday, October 17 meeting.

Councillor CaroleAnn Leishman said a number of local governments in the province provide the service on election day.

“Victoria is offering free bus service for residents of Victoria if they show their voter registration card,” said Leishman at the city’s COW meeting Tuesday, October 13. “I wanted to know if possibly we could do the same thing.”

City clerk Marie Claxton said she spoke to Tor Birtig, manager of operational services, on the matter that morning.

“It is very feasible and it’s no different than when we had [International Choral] Kathaumixw participants come and they show their participant ID to ride the bus,” she said.

Voters would be eligible for a free bus ride to the polling station if they show their voter registration card, added Claxton.
