On June 7, Powell River Fire Rescue requested assistance with an excavator that was on fire on a vacant property just south of the Italian Hall. Powell River RCMP responded and observed as firefighters extinguished the fire.

There was extensive damage to the excavator but no surrounding property was damaged. No one was injured in the fire.

The excavator had been spray-painted with violent and racist graffiti prior to being set on fire. The graffiti was similar in nature to graffiti that had been found at James Thomson Elementary School and in the lobby elevator outside Powell River Public Library in early May of this year.

Anyone with information about a crime is asked to contact Powell River RCMP at 604.485.6255, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477 or bccrimestoppers.com.
