MANY DONATIONS: Assumption School students in grades five to eight give the thumbs up to the We Scare Hunger event, where about 1,100 food items were collected to distribute to the local food bank.

On Halloween, Assumption School held its annual We Scare Hunger event, providing food to people in need.

According to acting principal Angela Bennett, approximately 1,100 items were collected to donate to Powell River Action Centre Food Bank.

“We were happy to complete an act of service for those in need at a time when the food bank doesn’t typically receive many donations,” said Bennett. “Students in grades one to nine participated in the collection.

“Kindergarten students sorted food into groups of 10 to assist with the final count. As has been done in the past two years to remain contactless and COVID-19 friendly, paper bags and informational flyers were dropped off to homes close by the school ahead of time for people to fill and leave outside their front door.”

Bennett said Assumption School wants to thank surrounding neighbours, Church of the Assumption parishioners, and all who heard the request for support on Coast FM for donating to this event. The school also wishes to thank Quality Foods for the donation of paper bags.
