Backyard burning of garden and yard debris is allowed for the month of November in Powell River. Recreational wood burning fires are not permitted at any time of the year within city boundaries.

According to a media release from the City of Powell River, Powell River Fire Rescue is reminding homeowners of several conditions required for safe burning.

Homeowners must have a valid permit, which can be purchased at city hall. Those who are planning on burning should check the venting index by calling 1.888.281.2992, or at envistaweb.env.gov.bc.ca/aqo/files/bulletin/venting.html. Burning of debris outdoors is only permitted when the forecast ventilation index is sufficient to disperse smoke, according to the release, and backyard burners should check the weather forecast and avoid days of high or gusty winds.

The release stated that it is: essential to prepare the burn pile away from structures or overhead obstructions; important to clear an area free of combustibles approximately three metres around the burn pile to ensure the fire does not spread; keeping the fire no larger than one cubic metre in size; use a burn barrel for added safety; burn it dry and hot as hot fires and dry fuel produce less smoke; remove dirt from the debris pile before burning and take time to add leaves and needles slowly.

Piles should not be left unattended and it is important to have a water hose, buckets, shovels and dirt ready to knock the fire down.

Fires must be fully extinguished by 3 pm.
