The following is a Canada Day message from City of Powell River mayor Dave Formosa:
Powell River is a mosaic of cultural diversity and on Canada Day we celebrate our community’s inclusiveness.
Our diversity is notable in the many languages spoken here, including Tla’amin, English, French, Malaysian, Filipino, Maltese, Mexican, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Czech, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Slovenian, Korean, German, Japanese and languages of Africa.
For the last eight years in the fall, the city has partnered with Powell River Immigrant Services, Powell River Council for Arts and Culture, and Powell River Diversity Initiative, to host the popular Celebration of Cultural Diversity, with music, dance, song and food from around the world.
Each year, Powell River hosts students who are attending the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy. Hundreds of international students have gone through School District 47 international school programs at Brooks Secondary School.
All this cultural diversity makes Powell River one of the most welcoming communities found anywhere in Canada.
As mayor, it is my privilege to invite all of Powell River and visitors to Canada Day, on Monday, July 1 at Willingdon Beach. Through the city’s parks, recreation and culture department, we are throwing our annual birthday bash in celebration of all that makes Canada the greatest country in the world and our community’s vibrant cultural mosaic. There will be live entertainment, cake, food, vendors, fun for the kids and, for the first time in 10 years, a spectacular fireworks finale.
