In 1633, accused of defending Copernican theory that the Earth revolved around the sun, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei was found suspect of heresy and sentenced to a form of house arrest in Rome.

In 1932, Canada clinched its fourth Olympic ice hockey gold medal in a row, tying the United States 2-2 in the final round at Lake Placid.

In 2000, the last Peanuts comic strip from Charles M. Schulz was published, one day after its creator had died in his sleep. It was the 17,897th and last in the series.
