On this day:
In 1920, eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted for allegedly throwing the 1919 World Series versus Cincinnati. They were later acquitted, but all eight were banned from baseball for life.

In 1972, with 34 seconds remaining in game eight of the Summit Series between Team Canada and Team Russia in Moscow, Paul Henderson scored the winning goal in a 6-5 victory for Canada. The win gave Canada four wins in the classic hockey series to Russia’s three; one game ended in a tie. The first four games were played in Canada; games five to eight took place in Russia.

In 1976, Muhammad Ali retained the world heavyweight boxing championship by winning a 15-round decision over Ken Norton at Yankee Stadium in New York.
