National Volunteer Week kicks off Sunday, April 7, and runs until April 13. The annual event highlights the estimated 12.7 million Canadians who give freely of their time helping to lift their communities and society.

Closer to home, First Credit Union, Powell River and District United Way, and Volunteer Powell River are inviting residents to nominate dedicated volunteers in the community to give them a chance to be recognized and rewarded for their hard work in the Volunteer Appreciation Giveaway.

“From trail work and bridge building to baking cupcakes, organizing teams or meetings, putting out fires, taking care of others and everything in between, volunteers are our heroes and we're excited to shine a little light on how much they mean to us,” said Powell River and District United Way executive director Dale Lawson.

“We'll send them a note to let them know how much they mean to you,” added Lawson. “Include their photo in our recognition reel and give them a chance to be rewarded with a fantastic local prize package for their important work.”

A random draw will be held on May 1 to determine the recipients of two prize packages and a donation of $500 to a local charity or non-profit organization of the winner’s choice.

First Credit Union marketing specialist Helen Theilmann moved to Powell River last year and said she was struck by the culture of giving back she found in the community.

“Volunteers are the backbone of any community, Powell River especially,” she said. “People often don’t realize how much time and energy goes into making our city such a great place to live. This is why taking the opportunity to recognize and reward some of these hardworking individuals through the Volunteer Appreciation Giveaway was such a fun project to be involved in.”

Volunteer Powell River coordinator Jayde Bazinet said last year was the first time the group had published a recognition reel of local volunteers on its site comprised of photos and information about the many ways people in the community are helping one another.

“We hope to continue this celebration from year to year,” she added, “to foster inclusive behaviour in our community, to build capacity through skill sharing, and to acknowledge the gifts that our community members have shared.”

Volunteer Powell River, First Credit Union and Powell River and District United Way encourage all residents to visit unitedwayofpowellriver.ca between April 8 and 30 to nominate volunteers they deem deserving of recognition.
