Bruce Wittrock, who has been with BC Ferries since March of 1996, has raised the ramp at the Westview terminal for the last time.
Having taken care of traffic control, ticket sales, crowd control and “making sure vehicles don’t go in the water,” he has enjoyed his various responsibilities at the the terminal.
“It’s been very, very, very good,” said Wittrock. “I’ve burned a few bridges over the years but it’s been all good aside from that,” he said, laughing, indicating no pun was intended on bridges.
February 28 was the last working day for Wittrock, who intends to watch COVID-19 play out and to stay calm.
“I’m just going to let the storms pass,” said Wittrock, who has seen many during his career.
He said he is going to remain in this community.
“It’s a nice place to live,” said Wittrock. “They have six feet of snow in Winnipeg now so I’m staying here. I’ve made lots of good friends and acquaintances.”
The BC Ferries terminal team decorated his booth on the ferry ramp and also put up balloons at the main building at the ferry terminal. Many in the community know him and will miss his wave as they leave and return from Texada Island and Comox.
