Marine crash involving Woodfibre LNG vessels: One person assessed in hospital

A crash occurred between two marine vessels working on the Squamish LNG project on Dec. 18, authorities confirm.

A crash occurred between two marine vessels working on the Woodfibre LNG project on the night of Dec. 18, authorities confirm.

"One individual was sent for medical assessment and subsequently released," said Woodfibre LNG's spokesperson, Sean Beardow, in an email to The Squamish Chief.

The Woodfibre LNG site is located approximately seven kilometres southwest of Squamish, on the west side of Howe Sound.

The incident occurred on the water near the site.

"Woodfibre LNG continues to investigate the incident in conjunction with the parties involved and appropriate regulatory agencies,"  Beardow said.

Scott Shaw-MacLaren, media spokesperson for Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCM-SAR), Station 4-Squamish, said at approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday night, RCM-SAR 04 was tasked to the boat crash, with the possibility of persons in the water.

The local volunteer marine rescue organization responded with five of its members on the water and two in support roles on shore.

The situation had been largely resolved by Woodfibre LNG-related personnel while the rescuers were in transit, Shaw-MacLaren said.

RCM-SAR arrived and recovered some debris, and then returned to its Squamish base.

"Woodfibre LNG acknowledges and greatly appreciates RCM SAR’s response to this incident, and the incredible work their volunteers do year-round in marine emergencies and search and rescue situations,” said Beardow.

“We also thank BC Marine Logistics and our on-site crews for their good work in response to this incident."

No police boat was involved, according to Squamish RCMP.
