Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for British Columbia's northern coast due to a strong frontal system moving through the region.

It is warning that inland sections of the coast should expect more rainfall amounting to about 60 millimetres in Terrace and up to 100 millimetres in Kitimat.

The weather office says the ground in those regions is already near saturation and has "little ability to absorb more water."

It says people should be aware that downpours can cause flash floods and landslides may occur in areas with steep slopes.

Another warning covers the northern part of the central coast, where Environment Canada says about 100 millimetres of rain is expected before tapering off Monday morning.

The weather agency says flooding is possible in low-lying areas, and it is encouraging people to monitor the forecast.
