Annual campaign offers Townsite homeowners chance to freshen façades

An annual campaign to further beautify the Townsite neighbourhood is now underway, thanks to the efforts of Townsite Heritage Society and RONA Powell River.

Townsite Paint-Up allows homeowners in Townsite who meet certain criteria to apply for a chance to win 20 gallons of Sico exterior paint, supplies and professional advice from RONA staff.

“It’s the perfect time for people to look at their houses and decide if they will have time to prepare to receive paint in the middle of the summer and get it painted this year,” says Townsite Heritage Society coordinator Linda Nailer

Nailer moved to Powell River in 1996 and says she marvels at the transformation of the Townsite since that time. Townsite Paint-Up campaign is now in its 23rd year and has been supported by RONA since its inception.

“It’s a wonderful program. We want to make the Townsite look awesome and help keep its heritage,” says RONA marketing manager Reeny Saari. “We’re just happy to do it and keep it going.”

Criteria for eligibility includes homes that are owner-occupied, original Townsite dwellings with at least 60 per cent original façade, in need of painting and located in a highly visible area.

The homeowner must have resources to paint the home this summer, be willing to post a recognition sign in their yard, have photos published and consult with the Townsite Heritage Society on suitable colour choices.

“This campaign encourages and assists people in making their homes more beautiful and to maintain a high level of heritage and appearance,” says Nailer. “It’s incredible the wave of interest and passion that’s going into these Townsite homes right now.”

Townsite earned status as a National Historic District in 1995 for having 90 per cent of its 400 homes almost completely intact as they were in the early 20th century. Townsite Heritage Society promotes activities and services to encourage heritage conservation in the neighbourhood.

Those interest in applying for a chance to beautify their Townsite home this summer are encouraged to contact Townsite Heritage Society at 604.483.3901 or
