City of Powell River's fall active living guide available online

Registration opens August 19 for variety of aquatic, fitness and recreational programs

City of Powell River's parks, recreation and culture department has released its digital fall active living guide, with registrations for aquatic, fitness and recreational programs opening at 8 am on Monday, August 19.

"We're excited to get back to our regular schedule starting at 6 am on September 16, after our annual maintenance," says Melissa Furlotte, acting aquatic programs supervisor. "Our aquatic fitness classes will begin right away during opening week, and swimming lessons will kick off in the first week of October, offering six different lesson sets."

Furlotte also noted the increased demand for adult swimming lessons. Beginner and intermediate levels for adults starting or continuing their swim journey will be introduced this fall.

“Sea snake Saturdays are making a much-anticipated return on the last Saturday of each month,” adds Furlotte. “Join us to challenge your balance on our giant inflatable snake from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on September 28, October 26, November 30 and December 28. We'll also be offering introductory lifesaving courses like Bronze Star and Bronze Medallion.”

The ice rink will host some fantastic special event skates, according to sport and recreation coordinator Alex Craig, starting with a Halloween night skate on Thursday, October 31.

"We're inviting everyone to dress up in their best Halloween costumes and join us for a spooky skate from 4 to 5:30 pm,” says Craig. “Plus, those in costume will get free admission.”

Craig also highlighted the laser light skate event on Friday, November 1.

"It's a night of dazzling lights, great music and a jumbo screen from 7 to 8:45 pm, followed by a teen skate from 9 to 10 pm,” he adds. “It's a perfect blend of fun and energy that everyone will enjoy."

Looking ahead, Craig mentioned the Winter Wonderland festivities, which will be starting on December 6.

"The ice rink transforms into a sparkling wonderland, perfect for family fun throughout December," explains Craig.

Returning programs include professional development day camps on September 20 and October 25.

"These camps are packed with activities like swimming, crafts and games," adds Craig. "We’re also introducing new programs for children, such as autumn leaf collages and tie-dye fun. Our fall programs are designed to provide a fun and engaging environment for all ages."

Health and fitness programs kick off the fall schedule with free drop-in fitness classes for the first week of September.

"This will culminate in a free Pop-up Pedal Party, an outdoor spin class, on Saturday, September 7,” says health and fitness program coordinator Alex Young, who also highlighted new programs for the fall.

"We’re offering trail running for beginners, Ease Fit—a beginner-friendly chair drumming class—and a new program called Thrive, which focuses on the exercise needs of people dealing with cancer,” she adds. "We're also adding new drop-in programs like Lift & Move and Spin-ergizers to freshen up our schedules. Popular classes like Seniors Wellness and Dynamic Core will return, along with a variety of yoga classes and specialized training workshops."

Young also announced the return of the Health and Wellness Fair from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, October 26.

"We’re thrilled to bring back this event with free admission, door prizes, presentations and a flu clinic," says Young.
