Paul Galinski's story in last week's Peak was amazing, uplifting and a wonderful example as to the emergence of hockey as a major sport for girls/women [“Powell River U11 Queens finish season undefeated,” April 18].
The success of the Powell River U11 Queens and their undefeated season, plus the increase in the number of girls playing the game in our fair city, is exciting and encouraging. Kudos to the team and the coaches of the U11s plus other levels now taking to the ice in the Powell River Minor Hockey Association.
Yesterday I watched a televised Women’s Professional Hockey League (WPHL) game between Montreal and Toronto, both teams vying for first place in the league and playing before a sold-out crowd of more than 21,000 at the Bell Centre in Montreal (home of the Canadiens). Both teams had a number of our national team players who won the world championship a week ago in New York against our arch rival the United States. “Exciting stuff” does not give it full justice.
I love the skill level and how nice it is to watch hockey without the goonery and fighting in the men's game.
I will be excited to be at the recreation complex next season to watch.
