Letter: Invest in workers and services

With the rise of businesses that are notorious for lack of respect for labour and environmental protections...Canada Post is finding it hard to compete

Canadian Union of Postal Workers have been on strike since the middle of November, including Local 808 members out front of the Canada Post office in Powell River.

With the rise of businesses that are notorious for lack of respect for labour and environmental protections, such as Amazon, Canada Post is finding it hard to compete.

A key CUPW demand in the current strike is to ensure wages keep pace with inflation [[“Powell River CUPW members will picket every day, says president,” November 18]. The union is also advocating for Canada to make good use of our postal infrastructure to offer needed services such as postal banking (as other nations do) and climate action, as described on its deliveringcommunitypower.ca website.

We know the Canadian government has bailed out private companies such as Air Canada and banks. We don't need a bailout so much as government action to invest in workers and services that Canadians need, and requiring companies operating in Canada to meet basic requirements for respecting workers, the environment and other basic standards.

CUPW has helped Canada move forward in the past, with its pioneering push for parental leave, for instance. I'm hoping we can build on that history now and improve our postal service, as well as our society.
