Transparency and clear communication are non-negotiable in rebuilding passenger trust with BC Ferries

As the summer of 2023 unfolds, our province finds itself caught in a relentless storm of frustration and inconvenience caused by never-ending ferry cancellations.

Waves of delayed, postponed or outright cancelled sailings have dampened vacation plans and dealt a severe blow to BC Ferries’ reputation as a reliable transport network. Add in website glitches sending out false information and what was once a symbol of seamless connectivity has become a source of exasperation for travellers.

While some cancellations are inevitable due to unforeseen circumstances, such as adverse weather, a lack of timely updates and transparency have left passengers stranded, scrambling for alternative arrangements, and questioning the company’s reliability.

Delays due to congestion at terminals slowing down the loading process, mechanical issues with several of the fleet’s vessels and cancelled sailings due to a lack of crew are all commonplace these days. Getting to a destination involves hope and crossing one’s fingers instead of expecting that travel will be seamless.

Workforce issues have compounded the problem. Skilled crew members, crucial for the company’s operation, have been burdened with demanding schedules and inadequate rest periods. Whatever hiring and training plans BC Ferries has in place are not working.

Swift action is needed to address these issues. Transparency and clear communication are non-negotiable in rebuilding passenger trust.

BC Ferries must invest in communication channels to ensure real-time updates and seamless information flow during crises, including timely updates on sailing statuses and cancellations, to keep passengers informed and able to adjust plans.

Implications of sailing cancellations extend far beyond the mere inconvenience of stranded passengers. Businesses, particularly in tourist-dependent communities, have suffered a significant blow to their revenue.

To navigate through this storm of challenges, BC Ferries must adopt a multi-faceted approach. Continued investment in a modern and sustainable fleet is of paramount importance.

Employee welfare should be prioritized. Implementing fair working hours and improved rest periods will go a long way in reducing human errors and ensuring a competent and motivated workforce. Offering continuous training programs can further hone the skills of the crew, making them better equipped to tackle adversities.

The path toward restoring BC Ferries' reputation as a reliable and efficient transportation network lies in investing in modernization, employee welfare and proactive planning. Only by taking these steps can the company hope to sail toward smoother waters in the future.
