While 2016 might be a year some would rather forget due to its tough run in the personal and political world, the positive, productive energy in Powell River was palpable once again. In 2015, it was a year of transition in our city, and 2016 became a year of getting things done.
There will always be those who wish progress would happen sooner and faster for this town, but 2016 was all about action.
In April, Tla’amin Nation ushered in a new era of self-governance in what was truly a once in a lifetime, momentous occasion for our area. Powell River residents should be proud that they were able to witness the beginning of the nation’s future without the Indian Act holding it down.
Meanwhile, City of Powell River mayor Dave Formosa and council pushed hard throughout the year to make their marks. Now two years into their four-year terms, councillors began to gain confidence and momentum and brought forward initiatives and action plans that will affect the long-term future of the area. Reflecting on the work done by council this past year, along with support from city staff, it is clear that councillors have big plans for the remainder of their terms.
The city and Tla’amin were not the only important stories we covered this year as our editorial team challenged itself to tackle stories with larger implications on our community, including social problems, health-service issues, far-reaching regional district matters and business development.
Many stories covered were not all roses and bunny rabbits, but fortunately, most of them had positive outcomes.
I am proud of the Peak team for tackling difficult stories and playing such an important role in our community. We are the only newspaper in Powell River and treat that with a serious responsibility and respect for journalistic integrity and fairness.
I believe we are doing important, quality work here in my hometown, a place that is changing and adapting with equal parts inspiration and trepidation.
A special shout-out to everyone who wrote letters or commented online about our coverage this year. It is those avid readers and commentators who keep the Peak editorial team on its toes, and we always appreciate feedback, whether positive or negative.
Happy New Year, everyone!
