Old Dominion infielder Matt Coutney named top Canadian college player

TORONTO — Old Dominion infielder Matt Coutney has been named the 2022 Canadian college player of the year. The 23-year-old left-handed hitter from Wetaskiwin, Alta.

TORONTO — Old Dominion infielder Matt Coutney has been named the 2022 Canadian college player of the year.

The 23-year-old left-handed hitter from Wetaskiwin, Alta., led all Canadian NCAA Division 1 players with 27 home runs, 70 runs batted in, 66 runs, 18 doubles and an .808 slugging percentage in 2002.

His .376 batting average was third among Canadians.

Coutney, the third Albertan to win the award handed out annually by the Canadian Baseball Network, was selected in the 10th round of the 2022 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Angels.

He had a .375 on-base percentage and hit a home run in nine games for the Angels' rookie club in the Arizona Complex League.

The six-foot-one infielder captured 41 of 52 first-place votes from a panel of scouts, coaches, executives, former players, writers and broadcasters.
