Powell River Villa hosted Vic West FC at Timberlane Park on Saturday, September 23, and were defeated 4-0 by the Vancouver Island Soccer League-leading club.
With a number of senior players out of the lineup, Villa fielded a young team bolstered by call-ups from the Villa youth U18 team.
From the start of the whistle Villa players were under pressure with goalkeeper Scott McKenzie making a number of key saves. Eventually, Vic West was able to break down the Villa defence, scoring at 16 and 35 minutes, and again right before halftime at the 46-minute mark.
Villa’s play improved in the second half. The home team held the visitors scoreless until an own goal in the 81st minute.
Villa created its own scoring chances, including a Jack Padgett cross to James Timothy, who’s header just missed the net, and a clean shot by Russell Pielle from inside the 18-yard box that sailed over the crossbar.
Villa plays its second of a three-game homestand this Saturday, September 30, against Victoria Highlanders FC. Kickoff is at 1:30 pm.
