DERBY AND SCRAMBLE: The second annual Fins n’ Skins tournament took place on July 20 and 21. The combination fishing derby and scramble was a two-day event where participating teams were rewarded with strokes off of their Sunday round of golf depending on their biggest chinook caught on Saturday.
This year the IRIS team of [from left] Mike Doxsee and Jamie Zroback, and [from right] Jack and John Wyse, seen here with Myrtle Point Golf Club head pro Kelvin Trott, won the grand prize by catching the largest chinook and shooting the lowest net round. They narrowly edged out the Powell River Outdoors team and a tight field of competitors to take top spot.
Tightened salmon fishing regulations caused a late change in scoring. Previously strokes had been deducted for a fish’s weight, but the majority of fish were too big for retention.
The event grew in year two, with increased registration and support from the business community.
Net proceeds will be donated to Powell River Salmon Society. Fins n’ Skins supported salmon enhancement; all the big fish were measured, photographed and safely released.
