Surrey shuts out Powell River Kings in playoff opener

Eagles take 1-0 lead in best-of-seven BC Hockey League first round series

BC Hockey League (BCHL) playoff action kicked off in eight cities on Friday, March 31, including Surrey, where the Eagles hosted Powell River Kings in game one of a best-of-seven series.

A first period power play goal 11 minutes into the game turned out to be the winner for the home team, who shut out the visitors 4-0. Eagles scored twice in the opening frame and added two more goals in the second period en route to taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Goaltender Kyle Metson made 38 saves for the Kings, who were outshot 42-29.

Eagles finished second in the BCHL Coastal Conference during the regular season with 73 points, 25 ahead of the seventh place Kings.

Attendance at South Surrey Arena was 1,015.

Surrey hosts game two of the best-of-seven series tonight (April 1) at 6 pm. The series shifts to Hap Parker Arena for games three and four on Monday, April 3, and Tuesday, April 4.

In other games, Salmon Arm edged Prince George 2-1, Cranbrook defeated Wenatchee 3-1, Alberni Valley outscored Victoria 7-5, Chilliwack beat Coquitlam 4-1, Nanaimo shut out Langley 4-0, Penticton thumped Trail 8-2, and West Kelowna won 4-3 over Vernon.
