An opponent finally scored on Powell River Villa last weekend, four games into the Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) season.

The shutout streak was ended by Victoria Highlanders, who scored twice in each half on Saturday, September 28, en route to a 4-0 road win at Timberlane Park.

“We fell behind 2-0 in the first 45 minutes and made some tactical changes at halftime that resulted in us putting Highlanders under some pressure and creating more scoring opportunities,” said Villa manager Chris McDonough. “Unfortunately, we had a man sent off for a second caution midway through the second half that tilted the momentum in the Highlanders favour and we gave up two late goals as we pressed to get back in the game.”

A number of regular players were missing from the Villa lineup, but that was not an excuse, according to McDonough.

“We need to be better, especially finishing, which is something we will work on in training this week,” he added.

Villa travels to southern Vancouver Island to play Gorge FC at Hampton Park in Victoria on Saturday, October 5, before returning home to host Bays United on October 13.

In other VISL Division 1 action last weekend, lopsided scores included Cowichan defeating Sooke 6-2, Lakehill downing Bays United 5-1 and Vic West hammering Comox Valley 8-1. In the only close match, Gorge outscored Nanaimo 3-1.

After four weeks of play, Division 1 standings are as follows: Vic West, 12 points; Lakehill, nine; Gorge, six; Highlanders, six; Villa, five; Bays United, four; Comox, four; Cowichan, four; Nanaimo, two; and Sooke, two.
