Midfielder Griffin Leach scored one of Powell River Villa's seven goals in Campbell River last weekend, which helped the local Vancouver Island Soccer League Club come back to win the Townsite Brewing Cup.

Results from a recent pair of matches between Powell River Villa and Campbell River SC could not have been more different, other than the road team coming out ahead on both occasions.

The Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) clubs met in the first leg of the Townsite Brewing Cup at Timberlane Park on Saturday, May 25. Campbell River doubled the offensive output of the home team and took a 4-2 lead in the two-game, total goals series. Villa goals were scored by Richard Murphy and Tylor Cramb.

The second game of the series took place on Saturday, June 1, at Robron Secondary School in Campbell River.

Villa tallied an impressive seven goals while giving up three to win the series by a combined score of 9-7 and claim the Townsite Brewing Cup. Jacob Duyvestyn scored twice for the visitors; Tylor Cramb, Marcus Cramb, Dane Slack, Caiman Duggan and Griffin Leach each scored once in the 7-3 win.

"It's a really great opportunity to get some meaningful games in the offseason," said Villa manager Chris McDonough, prior to the first game. "Villa usually doesn’t train in the offseason so this cup gives us a chance to get the team back practicing and playing games. Most players in larger population centres have spring/summer leagues to stay fit and that’s what we’re trying to provide here in our area."

Villa will return to regular VISL Division 1 play in September. Campbell River competes in the league's second division.
