Ben Belyea scored twice, including the game winner, to lead Powell River Minor Hockey Association’s U18 rep team in a 5-2 win over the visiting Campbell River Tyees at Powell River Recreation Complex on October 15.
After Powell River had a goal disallowed in the first minute of play for goaltender interference, the visiting Tyees opened the scoring for a short-lived one goal lead.
Tyler Durant assisted on Braedyn Louie’s equalizer before Liam Carroll converted a power play set up from Evan Piniewski to put the home team up 2-1. Carroll and Derek Kahn combined to assist on Belyea’s first of the game before the first period ended for a 3-1 lead.
The two-goal lead held up through a scoreless second period, and most of period three, until Campbell River cut the lead in half with 2:19 remaining in the game.
The visitors pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker and pushed for the tying goal, but Belyea intercepted a pass inside his own blue line, skated to centre ice and sealed the win with a shot into the empty net with 43 seconds left on the clock.
Carroll added another insurance marker with 12 seconds remaining. Louie assisted on both third period goals for the home team. Jeremy Pukesh also helped set up the final goal of the game.
Powell River hosts Cowichan Valley at Hap Parker Arena on Sunday, October 16. Game time is 1:15 pm.
