Powell River’s under-15 rep hockey team travelled to Kamloops for the U15AA River City Showdown tournament, where they dominated through five games to come out victorious with a gold medal. The games were played from October 11 to 13 on the Thanksgiving weekend.
In the Friday game against CDA Hockey Academy from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, the Kings played a tough, physical game, winning 5-3.
In the first game on the Saturday against Cloverdale Colts, Powell River won 10-3, then faced off against the hometown Thompson Blazers, getting a 10-0 shutout victory.
Powell River’s under-15s easily finished first out of four teams and went onto the semi-final game on the Sunday morning, facing the fourth-place team, the Cloverdale Colts, winning 4-2.
Powell River faced the Thompson Blazers, the home team, again, in the gold medal match and won with a dominating 8-0 performance in a game full of home-team penalties and amazing team play by the Kings.
According to Kings spokesperson Kim Barrows, the local players played amazingly as a well-oiled machine.
“Parents and grandparents came up to the parents of our team and all mentioned how great our team is and how you can tell that many of them have played together for a lot of years,” said Barrows. “Eight of these boys have played together every single year since first-year U11. They are in their sixth year together of rep hockey.
“We are looking forward to an incredible season ahead where the team is hoping to make it to provincials for the fourth year in a row.”
