Overtime was needed to determine one of the finalists for the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association (VIAHA) U15 Tier 3 championship.
Powell River U15 Kings came back from a 3-2, third period deficit at home on February 17 before ending Cowichan Valley U15 Capitals' season in the first minute of extra time. Lucas Gruntman set up Kooper Kozmeniuk's game winner to clinch the victory 38 seconds into overtime, securing a spot in the best-of-three VIAHA final series versus Kerry Park U15 Islanders.
Both teams scored twice in the first period, with Powell River goals coming courtesy of Kozmeniuk (from Gruntman) and Jack Weber (from Cooper Lawry). Cowichan produced the only goal in the middle frame. The home team forced overtime when Carson Laing assisted on Gruntman's third period marker.
Game one of the island final takes place at Kerry Park Arena on Saturday, February 24 (1:30 pm). Games two and three are scheduled for Hap Parker Arena on Saturday, March 2 (1:15 pm) and Sunday, March 3 (1:15 pm, if necessary).
