Powell River Kings rally late, defeat Nanaimo Clippers

Parker Lalonde scored twice, including the game winner, in Powell River Kings’ 6-4 win over Nanaimo Clippers on Friday, March 10.

Lalonde’s first of the night came with 2:03 remaining in the game, breaking a 4-4, third period deadlock at Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo. He also sealed the win with an empty-net goal with six seconds left on the clock.

After a scoreless first period, Clippers converted on their first of three power play goals at 5:43 of the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Kings responded with three straight even strength goals prior to intermission, including the 10th of the BC Hockey League (BCHL) season for Alexi Van Houtte-Cachero to even the score, followed by Cameron Symons’ 11th of the campaign and the 13th of the year for Jack Blanchett.

Trailing 3-1 heading into period three, Nanaimo turned the tables and also scored three consecutive goals to lead 4-3 with 5:32 remaining on the clock. Powell River rallied again just over a minute later when Ryder Ringor set up Anthony Yu’s 16th of the season and fourth of the game for the visitors, setting the scene for Lalonde’s late game heroics.

Noah Eyre, Adam Mendelson, Karter McNarland, Blanchett, Sam Schoenfeld and Symons each set up goals for the Kings, who were outshot 34-29. Goaltender Kyle Metson turned aside 30 shots to pick up the win. Attendance was 1,630.

Powell River faces Alberni Valley Bulldogs tonight (March 11) at Alberni Valley Multiplex. Game time is 7 pm.
