League wraps up curling season

Ties decided by final rock

Super League curlers concluded their season at Powell River Curling Club rink in Cranberry recently with a four-event playoff.

The A Event game featured Texada Transfer/Texada Inn/Vanderkemps team skipped by Gord Milne taking on Underwriters Insurance skipped by Mike Cameron. This hotly contested match was too close to call and was tied at five playing the last end. Cameron had the last rock and needed to play a tap back on Milne’s final shot which was resting in the four-foot circle to clinch the win. Unfortunately, Cameron’s shot did not curl enough and he rolled a bit too far, giving Milne the stolen point and the win.

In the B Event, Massullo Motors skip Felix Massullo faced Jim Sawka. The Chevy Foursome had both hands on the wheel as they controlled the game from start to finish. Massullo showed his shot-making skills in the 5-1 win.

The C Event contest between Triple H Electric and EKA Chemicals was a “nail biter” with Triple H skip Bill Hunter making some great shots down the stretch to edge out Ken Abbs and his EKA crew by a final score of 8-6. Abbs captured the league title two weeks earlier with an impressive 13-3 record.

The D Event game was truly a David and Goliath battle as A&W skip Glen Gibbs took on Bourman Developments skip Don Bourcier. A&W finished the regular season in fifth place while Bourman Developments were in the basement. The burger bunch definitely bit off more than they expected as Bourcier and his team matched them shot for shot. With the score tied at five playing the last end, Gibbs calmly proceeded to find his draw weight in his back pocket and made his last rock count for a 6-5 win.

Each winning skip was supported by three players. Players with skip Milne were Marian DeVita, Dick Vanderkemp and Rhonda Raimondo; with Massullo were Pat Hill, Doug Clark and Annette Massullo; with Hunter were Lois Hunter, Norm Siren and Debbie Lavell; and with Gibbs were Marlene Jolie, Pat Walsh and Lorna Downie.
