Horseshoe pitching season wraps up

Club members have strong showing in out-of-town tournaments

A banquet and awards night has ended the 2011 season for Powell River Horseshoe Pitching Club. A fun evening and excitement was had by all.

Jim Hoffman, president and Lionel Hanson, vice-president  handed out awards:

• Smith trophy (novice): Derek Boyes.

• Cec Coultry trophy (Intermediate B): Vito Cimaglia.

• Al Hoffman trophy (Intermediate A): Len Williams.

• Ted Simmons trophy (top level): Carol Skrodolis.

• Doubles trophy: Neil Groat and Lionel Desilets.

• League trophy winner plus League Play-off winner: team Shoe-Inns, members are: Bob Simmons, Lorraine Hubick, Desilets, Leonard MacLean, Nina Markham.

• Nick Rismnak trophy: most improved under 20 per cent Sandra MacLean and most improved over 20 per cent Lorraine Hubick.

A special award went to Simmons for accumulating 104 points in 50 shoes pitched. This is remarkable as few ever achieve this score.

The pitching season was a whirlwind for many local pitchers. Top tournament placings went to Lorraine Hubick who came first in class B competitions in Port Alberni, Ladysmith and Abbotsford’s BC International; Frank Hubick placed second in Powell River’s class E; Lionel Hanson placed first in elders class B at Cloverdale’s BC Championship; and Sandra Hanson placed third in class F at Cloverdale’s BC Championship.

New members are always welcome at the Horseshoe Pitching Club. Even though this year’s season is over, now is a great time to prepare for the 2012 season which starts in April.
