Of course Ryan Fairgray’s favourite player to watch growing up was a fellow goaltender. Curtis Joseph, who played for six National Hockey League teams during a 19-year career, was the idol of the current the Powell River Regals’ goalie who shares netminding duties with Laszlo Tamasik.
Fairgray developed his skills in the Powell River Minor Hockey Association system, where he won a Vancouver Island Amatuer Hockey Association U18 championship, and went on to play in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League with Campbell River Storm. He says his parents had the biggest influence in his hockey life, and that his career highlight was competing for the 2015 Coy Cup in Fort Nelson, BC.
Fairgray, who is a carpenter, has spent parts of nine seasons backstopping the Regals, who are hosting the 2024 Coy Cup this week at Hap Parker Arena.
Game one between Williams Lake Stampeders and Penticton Silver Bullets started at 3:30 today (Tuesday, March 26). Following an opening ceremony at 7:15 pm, Regals host Terrace River Kings in the second game of the day at 7:30 pm.
The round-robin portion of tournament continues March 27 (Terrace versus TBD at 3:30 pm, Regals versus TBD at 7:30 pm) and March 28 (Terrace versus TBD at 3:30 pm, Regals versus TBD at 7:30 pm). Semi-final (March 29) and championship (March 30) games are scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.
