Jared Siminoff is about to embark on an exciting new chapter in an already impressive golf career. On February 9, he will step into the role as head golf pro at Crown Isle Resort in Courtenay.
Siminoff started playing golf at the age of six and was a junior member at Myrtle Point Golf Club in Powell River during his entire childhood, until he moved away to take a professional golf management program at Camosun College in Victoria.
“For several years, as a birthday present, we used to take him to Crown Isle,” said Jared’s mom Sandy Townsend. “He loved golf right from a very little boy; now to have gotten the job to be head pro at Crown Isle is another sweet, sweet spot.”
Siminoff has spent the last seven years in Vancouver working as an assistant professional at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, and most recently Point Grey Golf and Country Club. This will be his first role as head pro and taking care of the entire operation.
“It was my first time jumping into a process like this; I didn’t know what to expect, it was definitely thorough,” said Siminoff. “In their press release when they announced that I got it they said there were around 60 resumes from across the country. It took a bit, but in the end it was very much worth the wait.”
Along with Siminoff’s family, another Powell River family has had an interest in his career.
Siminoff was the recipient of the David Court Memorial Scholarship, which was set up to honour Shirley and Ron Court’s son David, who passed away in an automobile accident in 2001 at the age of 25. At the time, David was working as the head golf pro at Crown Isle.
“Jared got a scholarship through the foundation which is very cool; he’s always been good to keep in touch and he’s had a really good career up until now,” said David’s mom Shirley Court. “For him to land at Crown Isle is just a really neat connection that way. It’s a positive thing out of something that wasn’t positive at all.
“I’m really really excited that Jared is getting a chance to go there; it’s a beautiful facility to work at.”
Shirley said they still fund junior golf at Crown Isle and Myrtle Point and do as much as they can for lesson programs and any help that will promote junior golf.
“Some years we buy equipment, whatever they are requesting, to our ability we will and that will continue on,” added Shirley. “David loved his junior golf and he had a huge program going over there. He loved the young golfers.”
Siminoff never met David but says the Court family has been incredibly supportive over the years.
“It was very special in a place like Powell River, where there’s not a very long list of golf professionals or people who have gone on to work in the golf industry,” said Siminoff. “It made that connection more special to me.”
When David relocated to the island he moved there with a group of friends, and one of those friends is still working at Crown Isle in the real estate department.
“When I went to the interview he expressed the story a little bit and it really started to click about everything coming full circle,” said Siminoff. “I’m very lucky. I know that not everybody gets the opportunity to do what they love and also be successful at it.
“It’s been a very cool time to reflect on the journey to get here and everything that’s happened along the way.”
