Aces split in two to trump playday

Win hampered by transportation timing

Powell River Aces Volleyball Club sent two teams, Team Diana and Team Doug, to play at the new Athletic Hall in Port Alberni over the weekend.

Team Diana defeated Nanaimo Volleyball Club U13s 25-23, 10-25, 15-13 and then defeated Port Alberni U14s 25-19, 25-4 to place first in Pool B.

Team Doug played Nanaimo U14 first and lost 21-25, 25-15, 11-15. They then played Comox Valley Volleyball Club and lost 23-25, 15-25. Their third Pool A match had them up against Parksville U14s. They won the first set 25-20, then lost 15-25, 11-15.

As a result Team Doug placed fourth in Pool A and had to play the first-placed team in Pool B in the playoffs, which was Team Diana. Team Doug won the first set 25-13 and narrowly won the second set 25-23. The victory put them in the semifinal against Comox. They won the first set 25-20 but had to forfeit the match as they had to leave to catch the 7:15 pm ferry. The forfeit placed them fourth overall because they couldn’t play the third place match against Parksville.

Highlights included Katie Tuba serving 12 straight points against Port Alberni and Annika Pfeifer and Meggan Skorey serving very well to make the second set against Team Doug very close, said coach Doug Skinner. “Overall, passing showed improvement, particularly for Paige Lawson and Lauren Mander. Maddie Yule had some awesome power tips and Matilda Bertrand had some intimidating blocks. Best hit of the day was produced by Claudia Piccinin, but it was in warmup. She sure liked it,” he added.

Next up is SuperSpike which takes place in Vancouver on March 24 and 25. “We will be entering two teams in this competition,” said Skinner, “and we should see the best U13 teams in the province. The girls are really looking forward to that weekend of play.”
