Michael continued working in agriculture before becoming co-owner of Smith Anderson Roofing and Sheet Metal. After retiring from Smith Anderson, he started his own gardening company.

Michael and Delors raised their four children in Victoria and moved to Powell River in 2007. In Powell River, Michael continued gardening and was a long-term volunteer at the Powell River Health-Care Auxiliary Economy Shop.

Michael was predeceased by his wife, his parents JohnMercer and Kathleen Mary, his brothers Peter and John, and his sister Anne. He is survived by his sister Margaret, his children Stephen, James, Patricia and Gregory, and his grandchildren Felix, Sean, Cullen and Garreth.
