John passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023. He is survived by his wife Ilga Arajs; daughters Becky Mills and Laurel Patten (Lee); and seven grandchildren Zachary, Taryn, Shawna, Devon, Trevor, Taylor and Troy. John was predeceased by his daughter Nora Blythe (Vic), sister Jeannette Gaydar (Dave) and brother Graham Mills.
John began his working life in the Royal Canadian Navy as a member of Naden Band, then as an electrician. He was a logger, household finance manager, timber framer and land surveyor during his working life.

John was a gentle giant, a soft-spoken, honest man. He was gracious and a great storyteller. Even though he was a very private person, he loved talking to others and hearing their stories.
John was a very intelligent man with a hilarious sense of humour. He taught me swear words I will use over and over again!
John was a talented man, a gifted wood-carver and timber framer for whom everything had to be done just so; no cheating. He will be missed.
