Coulson Aviation Martin Mars pilot Peter Killin was part of the crew that flew the aircraft from Sproat Lake, on Vancouver Island, to the Victoria area. A flyby of Powell River, where Killin was born, was part of the journey.

A flyby over Westview Harbour, captured on video by Peak reporter Paul Galinski, was part of the last flight of the Martin Mars water bomber — long a symbol of firefighting in BC — on Sunday, August 11. One of the pilots, Peter Killin, was born in Powell River.

The aircraft took off from Sproat Lake on Vancouver Island and flew over Port Alberni, Comox, Campbell River, Powell River, Nanaimo, the Gulf Islands and downtown Victoria before landing in Patricia Bay.

The Hawaii Martin Mars will be removed from the water and taken to the BC Aviation Museum in Saanich.
