At the qathet Regional District (qRD) board meeting last month, mandatory use of urn vaults within regional cemeteries was passed by directors under the cemetery bylaw amendment.

According to a staff report, the majority of local government cemeteries in BC use urn vaults for cremated remains. The report said that during removal of urns in the case of two sets of cremated remains per plot, urns often break and are not able to be removed in one piece.

qRD’s finance committee recommended approving the mandatory use of urn vaults for cremated remains at a meeting on December 6, 2023.
