qathet Regional District (qRD) has completed upgrades to the Texada Island old school parking lot in Gillies Bay. The facility is an active community hub housing the library, preschool and seniors’ centre.

According to a media release from qRD, due to potholes and uneven surfaces caused by degradation of historic asphalt and poor subgrade material, new subgrade material application and resurfacing of the parking lot was identified as a priority to improve access and safety for visitors and community user groups. Acting in an advisory capacity to the regional board, Texada Island Recreation Commission recommended these improvements as part of the qRD budget process.

With support of community works funding, contractors completed significant repairs, including substantial subgrade excavations and material placement, chip seal application and parking delineation, the release stated. Community works funding is available to all local governments through federal gas tax funds and is allocated through the Union of British Columbia Municipalities in order to support community projects.

The release stated that qRD follows a comprehensive asset management strategy for repairing, maintaining and creating new community infrastructure. This strategy aims to offer sustainable service delivery to maximize asset life spans and prioritize asset improvements, according to the release.
