According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the ozone hole over the Antarctic was relatively small in 2024 compared to previous years. NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists project that the ozone layer could fully recover by 2066.

According to NASA scientists, the improvement is due to both the declining levels of harmful chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) chemicals, as well as an unexpected influx of ozone carried by air currents from north of the Antarctic.

“The ozone layer acts as planetary sunscreen, shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation,” stated the ECCC. “Depletion of the ozone can increase cases of skin cancer and cataracts, as well as damage agriculture and ecosystems."
