Strong gusty winds will develop tonight off the Sunshine Coast

Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring beginning tonight, Friday, December 13, and into Saturday afternoon, according to an Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) wind warning issued this morning.

Southeast winds will develop overnight gusting 70 to 90 kilometres an hour on East Vancouver Island, Courtenay to Campbell River and the Sunshine Coast from sḵelhp (Saltery Bay) to Powell River, according to the ECCC warning.

"Strong and gusty southeast winds will develop overnight as a deep low pressure system approaches Vancouver Island. Winds will ease Saturday afternoon," stated the warning.

ECCC also warned about possible damage to buildings, such as roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches.

The Weatherhood weekend forecast is for up to 11 millimetres of rain accumulation today and throughout Saturday, December 14, and a daytime temperature of seven degrees Celsius for both today and tomorrow. Sunday, December 15, there is a 65 per cent chance of rain and a daytime temperature of five degrees.

Monday, December 16, the weather takes a turn, bringing sun and cloud with a 66 per cent chance of snow.
