SPCA seeks help from community for shih tzus surgery

BC SPCA Powell River Branch is seeking the public’s help to fund urgently needed dental surgery for a mother and daughter pair of shih tzus, Missy and Emma. The dogs were surrendered to the SPCA on July 2 because their owner was unable to pay for the cost of the operation.

When left untreated, poor canine dental health can result in serious bacterial infection and if this bacteria enters the bloodstream, it can significantly compromise organ health.

Without the surgery, both dogs will continue to experience extreme pain and discomfort. “Missy and Emma’s teeth are in terrible condition and absolutely need medical attention,” said Brandy Craig, BC SPCA Powell River branch manager. “Their teeth are literally poisoning them.”

Unfortunately, the cost of Missy and Emma’s surgery is $1,000. “This includes a substantial discount already provided by the veterinarian,” said Craig. “Sadly, the cost of surgery for these beautiful dogs is just beyond our ability to pay at this time given the other animals in our care.”

Each year the Powell River SPCA rescues nearly 500 abused, neglected, injured and homeless animals. Craig added, “Many of them are surrendered to us needing urgent medical care and occasionally we need to reach out to the generosity of our donors to help in these extraordinary circumstances.”

Craig is also hoping a new owner will step forward to look after Missy and Emma after the surgery has been performed. “As a bonded pair, it is extremely important that Missy and Emma remain together.”

The BC SPCA is a not-for-profit organization that relies on community support to care for the 30,000 animals it rescues each year across BC.
