SNOW TO RAIN: On Friday, January 19, and well into next week, the qathet region will see higher temperatures with up to 20 millimetres of rainfall.

According to the Weatherhood monitoring system installed at the Peak, which supplies direct weather updates to prpeak.com, there is a 99 per cent chance of rain for most of the weekend, beginning Friday night, January 19.

The cold snap that hit the qathet region is over, and snowfall warnings have been rescinded by Environment Canada. Temperatures will be above zero for the next few days, hovering around four to six degrees Celsius.

qathet ranked number one as wettest region, with 19.4 millimeters of rain, according to Weatherhood’s top five ranking for the day, with Sechelt in the number two spot.

Sunset is at 4:52 pm and sunrise on Saturday is at 8:04 am.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada: "The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has officially confirmed that 2023 was the warmest year on record."

WMO indicated that the annual average global temperature was 1.45 degrees Celsius, above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900) in 2023.

"Global temperatures in every month between June and December set new monthly records. July and August were the two hottest months on record. Sea surface temperatures were also exceptionally high for much of the year, accompanied by severe and damaging marine heatwaves. Antarctic sea ice extent has been the lowest on record," according to the WMO report that compiled data from six international sources to determine the global mean temperature for 2023.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada: “In Canada, 2023 ranked as the second-warmest year since 1980, following 2010. The record warmth observed in 2023 follows a long-term trend towards warmer weather."

Climate experts highlight how, "natural climate fluctuations can add to an amplify warming due to emissions of greenhouse gasses from human activity."
