A carbon neutral action report for the calendar year 2022 has been completed by School District 47 (SD47).
The report summarizes greenhouse gas emissions, the total offsets to reach net zero emissions, the actions taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and plans to continue reducing emissions in 2023 and beyond.
At the Powell River Board of Education meeting on June 21, secretary-treasurer Steve Hopkins said carbon neutrality is a requirement for school districts.
According to a report from Hopkins, in 2022, total greenhouse gas emissions in SD47 were 1,110 tonnes and 884 tonnes in offsets were required.
The report stated that the school district is responsible for arranging the retirement of the offsets obligation and agrees that in exchange for the ministry of environment and climate change strategy ensuring that these offsets are retired, SD47 will pay the invoice to be issued by the ministry in the amount equal to $25 per tonne, which amounts to $22,100.
