Police and BC Coroners Service respond to death

PEAK MONTH: A 29-year-old woman drowned at Savary Island on June 30. Drownings in BC peak during the month of July, according to the BC Coroners Service.

A 29-year-old woman has drowned near the barge terminal on Savary Island.

According to an RCMP media release, on June 30, around 8 am, police responded to the report of the drowning.

Police attended and conducted an investigation with BC Coroners Service, the release stated. The investigation remains ongoing, however, the death does not appear to be suspicious and there is no concern for public safety, the RCMP stated.

The family of the deceased woman has been notified. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Powell River RCMP at 604.485.6255.

According to the BC Coroners Service, there were 101 drownings in BC in 2023, with drowning deaths peaking in July.
