qathet Regional District announced the completion of upgrades the the Savary Island fire hall on July 2.

Building renovations at Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department (SIVFD) Fire Hall have been completed.

qathet Regional District (qRD) asset management planning meetings had identified required upgrades to the covered deck, stairs and accessibility ramp, according to a media release. The project was planned for 2020/2021 in the fire service five-year budget.

“This upgrade project ensures Savary Island residents have an excellent facility that is safe, functional and adaptable for future needs,” stated Mike Wall, qRD manager of asset management and strategic initiatives. “Our communities are fortunate to be supported by these volunteer firefighters, so it’s important that they have a facility that supports them.”

During the predesign phase, qRD staff and SIVFD members uncovered additional repairs required for both the upper floor, and the fire bay entrances. The design required coordination with a structural engineering firm to meet BC Building Code post-disaster standards.

The project was funded from capital reserves within the Savary fire department’s five-year financial plan, according to the release, and a building material donation from a Savary Island family.
